There once was a mother hen who had several baby chicks. She taught her chicks as to which grains and grasses were good to eat; those she knew would help her chicks to grow. Likewise, she taught her baby chicks about the dangers that lurk around the barn yard. Dangers such as the black snake that slithers in to either steal eggs and/or to eat little chicks; raccoons that break in to the hen house searching for eggs and little chicks to eat; the farmer’s dog that likes to enter the fenced area and chase chickens just for the sport of it. The mother hen also taught her baby chicks about the dangers of storms, and especially to be on the lookout in the event that a fire was to break out. But above all, she taught her baby chicks that in the event of any danger, they were to quickly run to her and hide under her wings. One day a powerful storm blew in, one that was ominously dark with lightning streaking across the clouds and thunder that reverberated for long periods of time. And then it happened, a lightning bolt struck the edge of the hen house and the dwelling immediately caught on fire. Most of the hens and their chicks were able to escape out of the hen house. After the farmer was able to extinguish the fire, the hen house being completely destroyed, the farmer found the mother hen’s charred body in the ruins. He picked up the hen’s lifeless body and to his surprise all of her baby chicks were alive, because they had heeded their mother’s warning to find safety under their mother’s wings. Not one of her chicks lost their life – but, she willingly sacrificed her life to save her chicks.
In reflecting upon the story of the mother hen, I am reminded as to why it is so important that we set aside a special day to honor our mothers. Mothers have an innate sacrificial love for their children; a desire to teach their children what it means to grow into adulthood, to love their family and to become productive citizens; to provide them warnings as to the dangers that sometimes lurk about in our society. But, she also teaches them that they can always find comfort and shelter under her wings (that is, in her outreached arms of love).
One of the most important acts of love that a mother can bestow upon her children is to not only teach them about the love of Christ, but to also live a life of love before Christ. When she teaches her children that Jesus Christ loves us so much that He willingly died in our place so that we could live eternally with Him, she imparts a greater love than her own.
John 3:16 states,
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 5:8 states,
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
The Scriptures teach that one of the greatest blessings for a mother is when she shares the Word of God with her children, and then her children place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. In 2 Timothy 1:2-5 the apostle Paul commended Timothy for his “unfeigned [sincere, real] faith” that he demonstrated unto the Lord – for which was a “shared” faith from his grandmother and his mother. Notice the words of this passage,
“To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”
Notice here in these verses the importance of mothers passing on their faith from generation to generation. Lois passed on her faith to Eunice – who passed on her faith to Timothy, Timothy subsequently placing his faith in Jesus Christ unto salvation, whom God called to preach His Word. Romans 1:17 further exemplifies this truth,
“For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
As we honor our wives / mothers today, let us first thank them for their sacrificial love – and let us pray that they will continue to be the godly women that God wants them to be. To all our mothers: Happy Mother’s Day!!
