A while back I read an article that told of a woman that was one of the world’s most famous porn stars – who came to know the Lord. The woman entered the porn culture at the age of 18, while being a college student, looking to make some fast cash. Seven years later she had much notoriety for her “line of work”. She stated that she “felt that she had made it big; after all, she was in the movies; she was successful.” She also stated that “it was a sense of pride that drove her”. She told everyone that she didn’t care what anybody thought. But as time went on, the industry started to wear on her – causing her to ask, “What am I doing with my life?” She considered quitting, but uncertainty held her back. Additionally, she started taking drugs (cocaine, pills, heroin, and meth) – all to numb the pain she was feeling. The thoughts of suicide also entered her conscience.
One day during a cry for help, she called her grandmother and asked if she could stay with her grandparents for a while; the call came as she was coming off of heroin and was having major withdrawals. Her grandparents agreed to pick her up. While there, she found out that her grandfather was going to a church service and asked if she could join him. It was at this church she met Jesus Christ, asking Him to save her. They gave her a Bible, for which she began reading; learning things that she had never known before concerning God. However, that experience “didn’t quite stick”. In other words, she found herself being lured back into the porn industry. She tried to hide her decision from her grandparents, family and friends – but they all quickly realized what was happening. However, the longer she stayed in the industry, the more disgusted it became to her. She knew she needed to completely leave the industry. One day while preparing to travel to another city to shoot a sex scene, she recalled hearing God speak to her; the Holy Spirit telling her to “bring her Bible” – the one given to her while at the church with her grandfather. While on the plane, she read of the passage speaking about the adulteress woman – for which she quickly identified with. At that moment she told herself that she would not shoot the sex scene. She returned home and began truly searching for God, and started attending a local church. She got involved in the church and her love for Jesus began to grow; she just wanted to live her life according to His Word. After leaving the porn industry, she committed her life to purity and stopped dating for a year in an effort to devote herself to God. After that, she forged a friendship with a man in the church, and the two started dating. As time passed, their relationship grew in the Lord; they married, and are now ministering to young adults in their church.
After reading this story I was reminded of a couple salient reference points. First, no one is too bad for God to save.
Romans 3:23,
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
John 3:16,
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
2 Peter 3:9,
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
Luke 19:10,
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Romans 10:13,
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Second, both churches she attended, her grandparents, and the young man she married recognized this woman needed the love of Christ – not only in salvation, but to also live as a new creature in Christ. They demonstrated their love for her by sharing the message of salvation and then by helping her to walk in her new life.
Romans 1:16-17,
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
2 Corinthians 5:17,
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
The question now must be asked, “Would we be willing to share the Gospel to a [porn star] – and help them to grow in the Lord?” We must consider our answer in light of 1 John 1:9,
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
The apostle Paul claimed that he was the “chief of sinners” – but by God’s grace he too was saved.
1 Timothy 1:15,
“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.”
If God could save Paul and the porn star – He can save you too.
